A Servant’s Heart

A Servant's Heart

In a room full of Christians, if I asked how many people would profess to be Christ-followers, hands would go up all around the room. But if I asked how many people are actually living to serve, I’m pretty sure those high hands would start to slowly fall down. If you know the story of Jesus, then you know that everything that he did was to serve others [Matthew 20:28]. So if we’re proclaimed followers of Christ, how did so many of us miss this message? And trust me, as I minister to you, I’m ministering to myself as well.  As humans we have this inherent selfishness that’s hard to shake. Our schedules are busy and flawed human nature has taught us to look out for our own. But can you imagine what a difference it would make in the Body of Christ if we made serving others a priority […]

An Open Letter To The Judgmental Christian

Open letter to the judgmental christian

Dear Sir or Madam, Let me first begin by saying that I love you and that for some of you, I know that your heart may be in the right place. But I speak for a great majority when I say that you are in desperate need of a change of perspective. Allow me to help you with that. If you’re sitting in church next to a person covered in tattoos and piercings and a dress that may be tighter than anything you’ve ever owned, what do you see? If you see a sinner that doesn’t belong and should be ashamed of what she’s wearing, then you, my dear, are a part of the problem. So often I see people treating Christianity or the church as a “social club” where if you don’t fit the standards of ‘holiness’, you don’t belong. Do we deserve Jesus any more than the person […]

Scriptures To Stand On When Things Get Tough

scriptures to stand on when things get tough

Psalm 119 describes God’s word as a lamp for our feet and a light on our path, and honestly, I could not have described it any better. When things get sticky and I feel completely consumed by feelings of hopelessness, God’s word always comes to my rescue and saves me from me. I’m sure some of you can relate. When things get tough, our minds tend to automatically generate thoughts of self-pity and frustration and “why me’s”. The scary thing is, if we allow ourselves to, we’ll get stuck there, completely missing out on the goodness and grace of God. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that when there seems to be no way out of a situation, God’s word will always encourage us and see us through. Here are some of my go-to scriptures for when things get pretty tough: 1.    John 16:33 I have told you these […]

12 Biblical Characteristics of Great Friends

Characteristics of Great Friends

It’s no question that our friends hold a major place in our hearts. We laugh with them, we confide in them, and they’re always down for a good time. Great friends have a way of making life a little easier. But what actually makes a friend, a great friend? I did some studying and I pulled out 12 characteristics straight from the Bible. Here they are: 1) Even-tempered “Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.” -Proverbs 22:24-25 2) Forgives easily (and doesn’t hang the situation over your head) “Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.” –Proverbs 17:9 3) Drama Free “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” –Proverbs 16:28 4) Trustworthy “Whoever can be trusted with very little […]

If You’re Feeling Burnt-Out

Burnout is something that we all experience at some point or another and it’s completely normal. We feel exhausted, lose interest in our day-to-day, and in some ways we feel like we’re trapped in a never-ending hamster wheel. This is exactly how I felt this week. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for the past 9 months and while I love it, it’s not easy. For the most part, I spend every waking moment with my children. I feed them, clean up after them, I entertain them, I home-school my three-year-old, I exclusively nurse my son, and I deal with the drama (anyone that has ever had a three-year-old knows what I mean). That’s not including my other responsibilities around the house and my marriage. It’s exhausting! So this week I felt myself start to shut down a little. That’s when God reminded me of a few things that I need […]

What Are You So Afraid Of?

A couple of months ago, I was watching a funeral scene on one of my favorite shows, Desperate Housewives. The man that died left behind a beautiful home, a beautiful family, a great career but he also unfortunately left behind a horrible reputation. Of all of the great things that he worked to build during his life, the things that he had not done were what left behind a lasting impression.  So I started thinking, if I were to die, what would be said in my eulogy? And while I could think of a few nice things, nothing came to mind that was truly impactful or really demonstrated how much I want to make a difference in this world.  As I was thinking about it, I realized that the sole reason behind this was nothing other than fear.  For a huge part of my life, I was so crippled by […]

How Reading My Bible Changed My Life

I know every Christian looked at the title of this blog post and thought duhhhh, haha, allow me to explain. I grew up in church and reading my bible was just as routine as standing up for praise and worship or taking communion. But that’s all it was for me—routine. I committed my life to Christ when I was pretty young and sure I would crack open the bible if I was going through something and I felt like I needed a word, but it wasn’t until maybe three years ago that reading my bible became a part of my life that I could no longer live without. Here’s why: God Reveals Himself We love to chant relationship over religion but it’s difficult to have a true relationship if we’re not really seeking him. One of the biggest ways that God reveals himself to us is through his word. Every […]
