When God placed human life on this earth He knew better than anyone else that life would be no walk in the park. Believe it or not, He intended for it to be that way. If everything was easy, how would we be reminded that we need him? Our dependence on God is central to our entire being. From the moment He banished Adam and Eve from the garden, from the moment He destroyed the tower of Babel, to the moment He sacrificed His own son, He has been trying to convey the same message: We need Him. Life is tough, there’s no argument there. But being the loving Father that He is, God has given us everything that we need to win in life, even in the difficult seasons, but we have to find our tools through Him. I want to start this series by talking about the tool that I am completely in love with: The Holy Spirit.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” -John 14:26
It’s pretty difficult to define the Holy Spirit in a sentence or two but here is what we do know: He is the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Trinity, and he lives within every believer, leading and guiding them into righteousness and speaking the truth of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is both a gift and a helper. This definition is completely oversimplified and in my opinion, doesn’t do the Holy Spirit justice. I think it’s more appropriate to define him by what he does.
He Passionately Prays For Us
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26
He Comes Into Our Lives Freely When We Ask
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! Luke 11:13
He Gives Us Hope
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13
He Helps Us To Be Obedient
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. Ezekiel 36:26-27
He Teaches Truth
And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 1 Corinthian 2:13
He Lives Within Us
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. Romans 8:9
He Helps Us To Serve God Boldly
And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31
He Guides Us
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. John 16:13
He Gives Spiritual Signs and Wonders
And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. Acts 2:17-18
This list could go on forever because the Holy Spirit is capable of so many things but if we were to sum things up, the Holy Spirit is our advocate and our helper that helps us to know, live, and speak spiritual truth boldly. He empowers us, he encourages us, and he convicts our hearts when we try to venture outside of the life that God has intended for us. He guides us in ways that we would never be able to do ourselves and he impresses things upon our spirits. That “something” that told you to drive the other way and helped you to avoid a head-on collision was him. If you’re not actively looking to the Holy Spirit for help, you are missing out on one of the most amazing tools that has been around since before creation. Simply ask for the Holy Spirit to be in your life, acknowledge Him in all your ways and your walk will change forever.
Prayer for Today//
Holy Spirit, I need you. Come into my life like never before and lead me in truth. Help me to be bold in my faith and help me to stand upright in my walk. Convict my heart when I do the things that grieve you and encourage me to keep going when life gets tough. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
