I know some of you are looking at the title of this post and thinking shouldn’t all Christians be happy? Maybe the short answer should be yes but we all know that life is never that simple. A lot of the time, the biggest difference between a happy person and a not-so-happy person is the way that they respond to the complications of life. The difference between a happy Christian and a not-so-happy Christian lies in the way that they apply the word of God to their life. God has given us all the tools that we need to enjoy a joyful life but it is completely up to us to put them to use. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit that comes along with serving an amazing, living God and anyone that has tapped into this gift knows that there are a few things that you need to do differently to keep it around. There are constantly things, people, and moments in this life that try to come for your joy but the truly mature and intentionally happy (or joyful) Christians take heed to Christ’s advice for remaining content. Here are three things that happy Christians do differently:
They Guard Their Hearts
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Proverbs 4:23
When problems or situations arise (or even have the potential to), we have a choice in how deeply we allow them to affect us. We have a choice in how we allow them to come into our hearts and we have a choice in whether or not we allow them to stay there. Happy Christians are good stewards over their hearts and they don’t allow every little thing to own a space; they invest their emotions wisely. Most importantly, they don’t allow things into their hearts that shouldn’t be there. Drama, toxic relationships, gossip, and unforgiveness have no room in happy Christian’s life. Take a look at this post to learn more about things that you should be guarding your heart against.
They Constantly Look to Christ for Peace
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
Happy Christians understand the power of prayer and they understand that their peace lies at the foot of Christ—not in retail therapy or anything else superficial. They don’t allow every situation to consume them and steal their joy because they value the joy that God has given them. When things get tense or overwhelming, they immediately stop to pray and they always ask for peace.
They are Happy No Matter Where They are in Life
“ But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” 1 Timothy 6:6-8
Happy Christians don’t waste time wishing for tons of materialistic blessings because they are too busy thanking God for the ones that they already have. They find joy in the simplest of things because they are able to find the fullness of God’s grace in them. They understand that materialistic gain is only temporary and that it’s unwise to allow your happiness to be contingent upon it.
There’s no such thing as a perfect Christian and there is no secret formula to happiness but the Bible has given us quite a few tried and true practices that are bound to work if we actually apply them to our lives. Remember, happiness is a choice and not a destination. No matter where you are in life, you can achieve happiness if you simply choose to.
