Dear Fear, You're Not Welcome Here

I have been given the great pleasure and honor to feature the thoughts of my best friend (sister, really) of more than 10 years on Far More Precious than Rubies! Sharrell Vorece is passionate about elementary education, her friends and family, and embracing overall ‘queendom’. She has been an inspiration to me for so many years and I have watched her overcome so much. Who better to talk about fear than one of the bravest women I have ever met? I love her and I know you will too. Enjoy!

‘Cause you’re beautiful like a flower
More valuable than a diamond
You are powerful like a fire
You can heal the world with your mind

There is nothing in the world that you cannot do
When you believe in you, who are beautiful
Yeah you, who are brilliant
Yeah you, who are powerful
Yeah you, who are resilient. – India Arie “Beautiful Flower”

I was introduced to this song my junior year of undergrad by a friend who recommended it to me after I shared with her that I was facing insecurities. It has been one of my favorite songs ever since. India Arie so beautifully illustrated a message of self-worth, resiliency, and that it is okay to change. As women, we find a perfect opportunity to reinvent ourselves when we have experienced something life changing or when we feel as if our lives are pretty stagnant. Whether it is having a new baby, experiencing a tough breakup, moving to a new town, or a milestone birthday! Queens, I want you to know that change is good, it is inevitable, and a lot of times it is necessary. If it is necessary to do a big chop (like me lol), join a kickboxing class, travel to a new place, or start a new career. Do what makes you feel good and be constantly assured that you are not alone, because God is with you wherever you go.

Change can often times be a very scary, foreign territory to trot into. I have had to experience change voluntarily and involuntarily several times and I am shy of twenty-six years old. With change, fear is often accompanied. One of my go to verses for overcoming fear is, Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Doesn’t that give you a feeling a comfort just reading that? It is that reassurance that God will not leave you as he has already created the roadmap for your journey. It is our responsibility to trust and lean on him.

I came across two acronyms that I thought were pretty clever about fear:
F- Face
To be honest the first acronym was my go-to for a very long time (sometimes it still is). I am growing through anxiety so it is super convenient for my mind to go to a place of “retreat”. After the panicking has surpassed and I am back to “myself”, well my rational self that is; I have to look in the mirror and remind myself what God has said about me. I’m no expert on overcoming fear but, I am a believer that if we “Face Everything and Rise” God will meet us right where we are to fulfill his promises.

Thanks so much to my sister, Ashley C. for allowing me to guest blog on my favorite Christian lifestyle blog ever! Thanks for reading, Jewels.

Many Blessings,

Sharrell Vorece
