Psalm 119 describes God’s word as a lamp for our feet and a light on our path, and honestly, I could not have described it any better. When things get sticky and I feel completely consumed by feelings of hopelessness, God’s word always comes to my rescue and saves me from me. I’m sure some of you can relate. When things get tough, our minds tend to automatically generate thoughts of self-pity and frustration and “why me’s”. The scary thing is, if we allow ourselves to, we’ll get stuck there, completely missing out on the goodness and grace of God. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that when there seems to be no way out of a situation, God’s word will always encourage us and see us through. Here are some of my go-to scriptures for when things get pretty tough:
1. John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
This verse is probably my favorite and it gets me so excited (like preacher-screaming-in-the pulpit excited). If Jesus can overcome the entire world, then how big is my problem really? Like seriously—the entire world. If Christ can overcome the world and conquer hell and death, all of our problems surely pale in comparison. There’s no question in my mind that he will see you through whatever you’re going through. He says, “take heart!” In other words, chill out…I got this.
2. Matthew 6:26-27
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
This is definitely one of those ‘check yo’ self’ verses but it is nevertheless a beautiful reminder of what a meticulous and compassionate God we serve. If God can provide for creatures that he has given us dominion over, how much more willing would he be to care for our needs? Don’t worry about a thing (cause every little thing is gonna be alright).
3. John 14:26
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
I don’t know about everybody else, but it is so comforting to know that I don’t have to get through things alone or even in my own power. The Holy Spirit is available to anyone that is willing to accept him. Allow the Holy Spirit to be your guide and to be that small, still voice that brings peace during your personal storms and helps you find your way through.
4. Hebrews 11 (the entire chapter)
Look, if you’ve ever had to ask can God do that (and at some point we all do), this chapter is everything you need. I like to think of it as God’s biblical Hall of Fame. Every time I read Hebrews 11, my faith skyrockets. Click here to check it out.
These are just a few of my personal favorites. What are some of the verses that you lean on to get you through tough moments? I’m always in search of new scripture!
