12 Biblical Characteristics of Great Friends

Characteristics of Great Friends

It’s no question that our friends hold a major place in our hearts. We laugh with them, we confide in them, and they’re always down for a good time. Great friends have a way of making life a little easier. But what actually makes a friend, a great friend? I did some studying and I pulled out 12 characteristics straight from the Bible. Here they are:

1) Even-tempered
“Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.” -Proverbs 22:24-25

2) Forgives easily (and doesn’t hang the situation over your head)
“Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.” –Proverbs 17:9

3) Drama Free
“A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” –Proverbs 16:28

4) Trustworthy
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” –Luke 16:10

5) Loyal
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” –Proverbs 17:17

6) Kind
“Anyone who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty” –Job 6:14

7) Encouraging
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” -2 Thessalonians 5:11

8) Unafraid to serve tough love
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted but an enemy multiplies kisses.”-Proverbs 27:6

9) Can give loving, sound advice
“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.” –Proverbs 27:9

10) They pray for you and provide accountability
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” –James 5:16

11) They help to keep your faith up
“ that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.” –Romans 1:12

12) They keep you sharp (both mentally and spiritually)
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” –Proverbs 27:17

I hope this helps! May we all be blessed with the gift of great friendship!
